Dear 4th Grade Students and Parents,
For the month of October we are focusing on COURAGE.
Please encourage your child to challenge themseleves. Students should be brave to experiment and try new things. Show your child to have courage and never give up!
October is an exciting month for fourth grade. The following will be covered in our units of study for each academic area:
Reading Skills:
We are currently on Lesson 2. This week we will cover the remaining of lesson 2. The comprehension test is on Thursday. Students are learning how to find evidence from the text to prove the author's purpose.
Lesson 3 will begin Friday October 4 and end October 14.
Lesson 4 will begin October 15 and end October 23.
Lesson 5 will begin October 24 and end November 1.

Writing:
For the remaining of Hispanic Heritage Month, students will be researching a Hispanic person who made a positive impact in our world. All students will be writing or creating a report on the person he or she researched. Specific information about how the report will be presented will be sent home by October 10th.
Moreover, in class students are writing narrative pieces. By the end of October students will have written a narrative as if they were either a Native Algonkian or Iroquois child. This ties in with our students learning about the Native Americans of New York.
Math:
We are currently on Module 10 from Engage NY. Students have been learning in depth about place value, rounding, and multiples of ten. By October 18th, most likely module 1 will be complete and students will be taking their assessment. To review what is expected please click on the following link:

Social Studies:
Students are currently learning about New York's geography, map skills, and by the end of October, they will be able to explain what life was like for the Native Americans in New York.
Science:
Plants and Animals is currently the unit of study. Students need to know the parts of a plant and the function, adaptations for both animals and plants, inherited phyical traits and learned behaviors of animals and humans. All of this information is covered in chapter three of the science book. The students will be tested on this information by October 8, 2013.
Parents, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. We are a team!
Thank you,
Miss Fernandez
